Memphis Last Minute

Overflowing with Southern Hospitality, the unique city of Memphis is the shining jewel of the South. Unbeatable as a spontaneous last-minute destination, Memphis offers something for all of your senses: the strains of the Blues calling to your ears, the smell of old fashioned Southern barbecue calling to your nose and the myriad sights that catch your eye. Visitors are welcomed to this heritage-rich city located on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River, but beware if you stay for a week or two, you may never want to go home.

For music lovers, this city is the place to be. As the birthplace of both rock ‘n roll and the blues, Memphis lays greater claim to shaping the music of the 20th century than any other city in the nation. Memphis is home to blues notables such as B.B. King and the late W.C. Handy, as well as rock ‘n roll pioneer Elvis Presley. Take a relaxing tour on the Memphis Main Street Trolley, and experience the charms of historic Beale Street, where you’ll find a museum dedicated to the life and career of Handy. If you’re more into “The King,” take a trip over to Graceland, the home of the late Elvis Presley. While it is filled with memorabilia from his career, Graceland also houses items from Elvis’ personal life, including his famous pink Cadillac and his personal jet.

Memphis is teeming with various restaurants and nightclubs mixing a bit of the old and new, serving the latest in both international and local cuisines, while live musicians often play music reminiscent of the great masters of the Blues.

If you’ve got little ones along for the ride, no doubt you’ll have to stop at Celebration Station, located just off I-40. One of Memphis’ top entertainment centers for family fun, this exciting place features miniature golf, bumper boats, and over a hundred of the latest arcade games. Just think of all the fun you can have with the whole family! And during your vacation, don’t forget to check out such sites as Libertyland, the Memphis Zoo, and the Children’s Museum of Memphis. And when you’re done, head over to Union Planter’s IMAX Theater, an attraction that will keep the attention of older and younger visitors alike.

One of Memphis’ biggest attractions, Mud Island’s 52 acres draws huge crowds every year and is guaranteed to be a blast. Home to the Mississippi River Museum, a 5,000 seat amphitheater and Tennessee’s largest swimming pool, this unique destination is full of features you can’t find anywhere else. There is even a scaled model of the Mississippi in the River Walk area. Take the monorail to Mud Island and you’ll save your energy for browsing through the many shops or sampling the fare at the various restaurants.

Later, a ride down the Mississippi River on a beautifully restored paddlewheel riverboat is just what you need to experience Memphis’ rich cultural heritage. You could also visit the Pyramid, the third largest pyramid in the world at 32 stories tall. But unlike Egypt’s pyramids, this giant contains a sports and entertainment complex!

After a day of being out on the town, browsing through museums, or taking in the picturesque countryside nearby, check out the Art Museum at the University of Memphis, which displays a variety of exhibits throughout the year. At the end of the day, hit the Overton Square Entertainment District, a relaxing place to enjoy the shopping at the amazing array of stores, shops, and boutiques.

As you can see, the city of Memphis offers a variety of exciting things to do. Whether your interest is in family fun, cultural history, or simply sitting back and enjoying a fine meal and incredible music, this bustling metropolis located right on the banks of the Mississippi River has it all!
