Phoenix Last Minute

A stunning mountain backdrop, fields and hills filled with green and a nearly eight-month period of perfect weather are just some of the draws to Phoenix, the capital and largest city in Arizona. Home to over 1.5 million residents, Phoenix also claims the title of the largest city in the Southwestern region of the US, as well as the Mountain West. Phoenix’s 15 urban villages divide up the city, with a number of well-known neighborhoods contained within them, such as Downtown, Midtown, West Phoenix, North Phoenix and South Phoenix.

While Phoenix has experienced a recent boom, it has a long and established history as a hub for a variety of industries. Incorporated in 1881, Phoenix went on to become an important location for the production of military supplies for World War II. Now, Phoenix is a major center for transportation, culture, government, education, telecommunications, and of course, tourism.

The glorious Phoenix Mountains and the South Mountains can be found looming protectively over Phoenix, and several more mountain ranges lie nearby as well. Don’t expect very much rain here, as the sun shines almost non-stop. However, being located in a desert, visitors should expect extreme heat at times, as the temperature has been known to reach as high as 120 degrees! But the lack of humidity adds a bit of comfort to this daunting number.

Many visitors choose to make thei rPhoenix trip in the winter, to take advantage of the cooler season. Many activities are available to make for a phenomenal trip: golf, swimming, dining, shopping, etc.

This city is filled with wonderful attractions that will keep you entertained and intrigued. If you’re itching to pick up some souvenirs, head to the Arizona Center, a busy downtown marketplace. More than 50 specialty shops and charts offer a number of items for you to choose from. There are also nine full-service restaurants to serve you exceptional meals. Later, put on your cowboy boots for a little country/western dancing, or watch a game at a sports bar. Don’t worry about the heat: a state-of-the-art misting system will keep you cool throughout the Arizona Center.

Music lovers flock to the Blockbuster Desert Sky Pavilion, a venue that brings top acts and puts on amazing outdoor concerts. A cooling system allows you extra comfort while you enjoy the show. If you’re seeking a more “refined” musical experience, the Phoenix Symphony Hall and Terrace is a gorgeous facility that hosts many theater and music events, including performances by the Phoenix Symphony and the Arizona Opera.

The Orpheum Theatre also draws crowds with its ornate Spanish Baroque-style architecture. Built in 1929, this structure is the last surviving historic theater in downtown. All types of performance groups put on sensational shows here.

Visit the Pueblo Grand Museum and Cultural Park to see a Native America archaeological site that was once a thriving city. This attraction combines a museum with ruins that will both mystify and intrigue visitors.

Another option for visitors seeking more knowledge about the area is the Phoenix Art Museum. Specializing in contemporary Southwestern art, the museum also features collection that represents other forms of North America art, such as sculpture, photography, and decorative objects, all contained within its 65,000-square-foot gallery space.

The Botanical Desert Gardens is another not-to-be-missed attraction that demonstrates the incomparable beauty of over a thousand plant species on its 150 acres. A self-guided nature walk lets visitors engage in their own personal experience with the calming surroundings. When it’s time to eat, head to Encanto Park and Recreation Area, the city’s largest flatland park, for a picnic and maybe a little swimming or fishing. Another fun option is the Phoenix Zoo, home to more than 1300 animals.

Come see Phoenix, an ever-expanding city in the desert.
